Petr Popelka releases Mozart: Symphonies Nos. 39 & 40 on LAWO Classics

Today, Petr Popelka releases Mozart Symphonies Nos. 39 & 40 on LAWO Classics. Recorded with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, it is Popelka’s second album with the orchestra following their recording of Sibelius’s orchestral songs with mezzo soprano Marianne Beate Kielland in 2022. This album constitutes the final milestone as Petr Popelka concludes his three-year term as the orchestra’s Chief Conductor since the 2020/21 season, where he led countless successful concerts.

This June, Popelka was elected as the Wiener Symphoniker’s next Chief Conductor by an overwhelming majority vote, starting in the 2024/25 season. Already leading the orchestra as their Chief Conductor Designate in the current season, he embarks on two European Tours in addition to concerts at the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus in Vienna.

Aside from symphonic concerts, Popelka also extends his reach to opera, opening this season with his debut at the Zürich Opera House, conducting Don Giovanni. This is followed by a new production of Weinberger Schwanda the Bagpiper at the MusikTheater an der Wien, with the Wiener Symphoniker in the orchestra pit.
