FROM THE DOUBLE BASS TO THE PODIUM OF THE STAATSKAPELLE DRESDEN

November 10, 2021

In just two seasons, Petr Popelka has built up an impressive conducting career, the next highlight of which is the biggest German classical TV event: on 27 November, he will conduct the traditional ZDF Advent Concert from Dresden’s Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), featuring Lang Lang and Katharina Konradi as soloists. On this occasion, he will be at the helm of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, of which he was a member until two years ago. The concert will be broadcast on ZDF on 28 November at 18:00 CET, and will subsequently be exploited worldwide.

Petr Popelka’s path from the double bass stand in a traditional orchestra to the rostrum of leading orchestras has been extraordinarily rapid: as part of the so-called “kapelle 21,” he initially led musicians of the Staatskapelle before Alan Gilbert took notice of him and made him the first “Conductor Fellow” of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. This was immediately followed by his appointment as Principal Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra in Oslo.

In September 2022, he will begin his tenure as Chief Conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. Early guest conducting engagements took him to Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Last summer he made a highly successful debut with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the Vienna Konzerthaus, and this season will see further debuts with hr-Sinfonieorchester, Czech Philharmonic and Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, among others. A new production of Shostakovich’s The Nose (directed by Peter Konwitschny) will bring him back to the pit of the Semperoper Dresden.

Petr Popelka to become Chief Conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra - Debut with the Wiener Symphoniker

May 26, 2021

Petr Popelka will become Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra starting with the 2022/2023 season. The Czech conductor, whose career is developing rapidly, will take up the position in addition to his Chief Conductor post with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra in Oslo. Apart from subscription concerts at the Rudolfinum and regular studio recordings, Petr Popelka will also lead the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra on international tours.

Petr Popelka: “It is a great pleasure and honour for me to take over the position of Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of this outstanding orchestra. For me, it is also a return to the very orchestra of my hometown, in which I began my professional musical career at the age of 19 as a double bass player. In addition to the large symphonic repertoire, I will lay a focus on works from the 20th and 21st centuries.“

Next week Petr Popelka will make his debut with the Wiener Symphoniker with three concerts at the Wiener Konzerthaus. In addition to Beethoven’s 1st Piano Concerto (soloist: Piotr Anderszewski), the programme includes the “Four Symphonic Interludes from Intermezzo” by Richard Strauss.

In the 2021/2022 season, he will work with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg and Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, among others. New opera productions will take him to Dresden’s Semperoper and Prague’s National Theatre.
